Due to the icy cold, the inauguration of future US President Donald Trump is being moved to the Capitol. Trump wrote on his online platform Truth Social that he did not want people to be injured or harmed in any way and had therefore ordered that the inauguration speech, prayers and other speeches on Monday take place in the Capitol dome hall. Traditionally, the ceremony takes place in the open air on the west side of the parliament building.

The inauguration usually draws crowds to the National Mall, the large promenade between the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial. Trump wrote that a sports arena in the center of Washington would be opened for visitors to watch the inauguration live via broadcast. The traditional parade will also take place there - and he himself will be there after his swearing-in, Trump wrote.
Inauguration with rarity value
The US capital Washington cannot escape the sub-zero temperatures - on Monday it could be colder than it has been at an inauguration in decades. It is not expected to be quite as icy as at Ronald Reagan's second inauguration in 1985, when it was close to minus 14 degrees at midday, according to the National Weather Service. However, the forecast for Sunday night is currently around minus eight degrees, the maximum temperature on Monday is expected to be around minus six degrees, and it could feel much colder.
Reagan's second inauguration also had to take place in the Rotunda. His inauguration is reported by the weather service to be the coldest since weather records began in 1871. The weather service states that the "normal" maximum temperature on the day of the inauguration was seven degrees. The normal minimum temperature is minus one degree. At midday, it is usually around three degrees.
In the past, Trump has repeatedly used cold snaps as an opportunity to mock global warming.
