According to his own statements, US President Donald Trump wants to speak with Russian head of state Vladimir Putin on Tuesday.

According to reporters traveling with him, he said this during a flight on his presidential plane Air Force One, on which he spoke about a possible end to the war in Ukraine, as several US media outlets reported in unison.

According to the Bloomberg news agency, Trump said on the flight from the US state of Florida to the capital Washington that the chances of a deal were very good and that there might be something to announce by Tuesday. When asked what concessions he expected from Putin, the US president replied that large parts of the discussion would revolve around territorial claims. According to US broadcaster Fox News, Trump also said that the future of power plants would be one of the issues discussed.

During the election campaign, the Republican repeatedly boasted of his allegedly good contacts with Putin and claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. In February, Trump then spoke to the head of the Kremlin in person - and only then to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for whom the USA was always the most important supporter during the three years of war.

Trump not only agreed talks with Putin on ending the war, which has been going on since February 2022, he also held out the prospect of a personal meeting at a later date. No date has yet been set for this.

The Ukrainian government and its European allies fear that Trump wants to force through a peace settlement that could give Russia a one-sided advantage and allow it to emerge as the de facto winner of the war, which has resulted in many losses. Against this backdrop, the fact that the new US administration demanded an agreement on the exploitation of rare earths in Ukraine - as a kind of compensation for the support the USA has provided to date - was perceived as a worrying signal in Ukraine and many EU states.
