US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and veteran, will be nominated as Secretary of Defense. Hegseth, who has dedicated his life to serving the troops and the country, is described as "tough, smart" and a staunch advocate of the "America First" policy. Trump emphasized that with Hegseth at the helm, America's enemies have been warned.
Hegseth has an impressive academic career and served as a soldier in Guantánamo, Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was awarded high honors. As a presenter, he has used his platform to advocate for the military and veterans. He is also the author of a best-selling book on how to restore the military to its former strength.
Hegseth currently hosts the program "Fox & Friends Weekend" on Fox News, a right-wing conservative network. During the election campaign, Trump frequently appeared on the morning show to promote his issues.
Trump's government team is forming
After his election victory in November, Trump immediately began putting together his government team. Shortly after the election, he appointed Susan Wiles, his previous campaign manager, as his future White House Chief of Staff. Further nominations followed, including John Ratcliff as CIA Director.
During Trump's first term in office from 2017 to 2021, the administration was characterized by an unusually high number of staff changes. Trump regularly dismissed ministers or other employees, while some resigned of their own accord. The dismissal of then Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, announced via Twitter, on the platform now known as X, became particularly well known.
