US President-elect Donald Trump is in favor of Mike Johnson's re-election as Speaker of the US House of Representatives. The Republican Johnson wants to be confirmed in the powerful office at the head of the House of Representatives in a vote expected to take place on Friday. Johnson is a "good, hard-working, religious man" who will do the right thing, Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. "Mike has my full and unqualified support."

Johnson had already been nominated by his party in mid-November for the post, which he has held since October 2023. As the Republicans only have a wafer-thin majority in the House of Representatives and voices have recently been raised against Johnson from within his own party, some dissenters could join the Democrats in preventing the 52-year-old's re-election. Trump's public support is therefore very important for Johnson. In recent months, he has worked hard to get close to Trump.
There was a fierce dispute in the House of Representatives before Christmas. Trump had tried to introduce a multi-year suspension of the debt ceiling as an issue in the budget negotiations and was supported by tech billionaire Elon Musk. Democrats and Republicans eventually agreed on a compromise in which Trump's core demand did not prevail. This caused displeasure among some Republicans and raised the question of whether Trump would give Johnson his support in the race for the presidency.
