In the battle for the remaining seat in the Basel government, the current Director of Construction Esther Keller (GLP) is ahead of her left-wing challenger Anina Ineichen (Greens) according to the interim results. The red-green party is therefore likely to miss out on a majority in the executive.
Keller, who has been Director of Construction and Transport since the beginning of 2021, received 29,628 votes from postal voters in the second round of voting on Sunday, according to the interim results published by the State Chancellery. Ineichen, the opposing candidate put forward by the left-wing parties, received 18,828 votes.
The 40-year-old Keller was the only incumbent to make it to the second round of voting after the general election of the Basel cantonal government council on October 20. The other six previous members of the cantonal government had already been confirmed in office in the first ballot.
With Ineichen, the SP, Greens and Basta wanted to regain the 16-year red-green majority in the Basel executive that was lost in the 2020 elections. Instead of a Basta candidate, Keller made the leap into the executive.
