In the interview published on Sunday, Dettling said that being a Federal Councillor could not be a life goal.
As a Federal Councillor, you are very much determined by other people's schedules, explained the National Councillor from Schwyz. In his role as party president, he could cancel appointments. "If I have a meeting in the summer, I cancel it. That's not possible as a Federal Councillor." Dettling has been President of the SVP Switzerland since March 2024.
There are currently two SVP representatives on the Federal Council: Albert Rösti and Guy Parmelin. Rösti heads the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications. Parmelin heads the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research.
If the party were to receive a third Federal Council seat in the future, "we would immediately take over the Department of Justice or the Department of Defense," announced Dettling.
