Despite reports of progress in the talks on a ceasefire in the Gaza war, a hoped-for quick breakthrough has so far failed to materialize. The Israeli Kan channel reported that the government in Jerusalem is still waiting for answers from the Islamist Hamas regarding details of an agreement.

An unnamed Israeli representative told the broadcaster that there would be no further progress without a list of hostages who could be released. However, according to the report, an Israeli delegation is still in Qatar.
The USA, Egypt and Qatar are mediating between Israel and Hamas, who are not negotiating directly with each other. The aim is a ceasefire and the release of hostages still being held in the Gaza Strip in return for Palestinian prisoners.
Netanyahu: Hamas must not remain in power
However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently told the Wall Street Journal: "I will not agree to an end to the war until we have eliminated Hamas." The terrorist organization would not be allowed to remain in power in the coastal strip.
The mother of a female hostage criticized this and told the Kan channel: "The agreement is moving further away." When Hamas hears Netanyahu's statements, the organization asks itself: "Why should I agree to a deal if the war does not end?"
