In the latest parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka, the left-wing alliance of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won a clear majority. The National People's Power (NPP), led by the Marxist Dissanayake, secured at least 123 of the 225 seats in parliament, according to partial results from the state election commission. This majority considerably strengthens the position of the 55-year-old head of state.
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa's alliance, on the other hand, was only able to win at least 31 seats. This result underlines the dominance of the NPP and the support Dissanayake receives from the population.
Hope for economic recovery
Sri Lankans have high hopes for the new government under Dissanayake. After the massive protests two years ago, which were triggered by a severe economic crisis, many citizens expect the new leadership to put the country on the road to recovery. However, the economic challenges remain considerable and expectations of the government are high.
With the election victory, Dissanayake now has the opportunity to implement his political plans and introduce much-needed reforms. The coming months will show whether the government is able to meet the population's expectations and lead the country out of the crisis.
