Spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied a question that also dealt with Asma al-Assad's allegedly desired divorce. However, the question was formulated in such a complex way that it remained unclear exactly which part he was denying.
A reporter wanted to know from Peskov whether reports were true that Assad's wife had filed for divorce and wanted to leave Russia, but that Assad himself had been banned from leaving the country and his assets had been confiscated. "No, that is not true," Peskov replied.
The Interfax news agency then ran the headline: "Peskov has denied reports that Assad's freedom of movement has been restricted." The state news agency Tass in turn interpreted Peskov's denial to mean that the divorce plans had also been denied.
Initially, Turkish media had reported that Assad's wife was dissatisfied with her living conditions in Moscow due to the frozen assets and had filed for divorce in order to be able to leave for London. She also has British citizenship.
