The organization, which is based in the southern French port city of Marseille, says it has rescued more than 40,000 people from the Mediterranean since 2016. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2140 people have died or been reported missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe since the beginning of the year.
