In an interview on Fox News, Rutte was asked whether he had the impression after his meetings in the White House that Trump felt committed to Nato - given that the possible German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was also of the opinion that we could no longer rely on America.
Rutte explained that Trump had made it clear that he was on Nato's side. Trump also welcomed the fact that the Europeans and Canadians would spend more on defense. At the end of the conversation, Rutte said of Trump: "I respect him, he is a good friend and a good ally."
At the beginning of March, Trump had once again expressed doubts about the mutual assistance article of the NATO treaty. "If they don't pay, I won't defend them," the Republican replied to a question from a journalist. During his first term in office, he had threatened to withdraw the USA from the military alliance if the partner countries did not meet their obligation to spend at least two percent of their gross domestic product on defense.
