Ukrainian soldiers are to train in Romania in the near future. To this end, a new naval base is to be established in Ukraine's southern neighbor. The parliament in Bucharest has approved a corresponding proposal by President Klaus Iohannis by a large majority.

The "recent developments in the Russian Federation's war of aggression against Ukraine have shown the need to intensify and diversify the training of the Ukrainian army", the head of state wrote to parliament.

The training of Ukrainian naval infantrymen in the NATO and EU country Romania is initially to last two years. Parliament also approved a further Romanian contribution to the new NATO command NSATU. Ukrainian armed forces are to be trained at the Campia Turzii airbase in northern Romania.

NATO launched the NSATU (National Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine) command this summer. It provides weapons supplies and training activities for the Ukrainian armed forces.
