The negotiations on a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages are reportedly down to the last details.

In principle, Israel and the Islamist Hamas have reached an agreement at the ongoing talks in the Qatari capital Doha, the Times of Israel reported last night, citing Arab negotiators. However, final details regarding the withdrawal of the Israeli army from areas in Gaza still need to be clarified.

Hamas has asked Israel to present maps and a timetable for the withdrawal, which is to be monitored by the mediators during implementation, said sources close to Hamas. The ball is now in Hamas' court, said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in the US capital Washington: "At this moment, as we sit here, we are waiting for the final word from Hamas on their agreement." He assumed that an agreement would be reached, Blinken said.

The Arab negotiators quoted by the Times of Israel speculated that an agreement could be announced today or Thursday in the form of a joint statement by the USA, Qatar and Egypt. The three countries are mediating between Israel and Hamas, as they do not negotiate directly with each other.
