The Ukrainian leadership has criticized an offer by Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with US President Donald Trump in the near future. The Kremlin leader is trying to promote the idea of negotiations with the USA, Ukrainian presidential adviser Andriy Yermak wrote on Telegram. "But he has one condition - he wants to negotiate the fate of Europe - without Europe. And he wants to talk about Ukraine - without Ukraine."

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, head of the presidential administration, went on to say that this could not work in a modern world. "Putin himself must return to reality or he will be brought back."
Putin, who is largely isolated in the West, practically forced himself into an early meeting with Trump in an interview on state radio. "It is indeed better if we meet on the basis of today's realities to talk calmly about all the areas that are of interest to both the United States and Russia," he said. "We are ready to do that."
Trump also wants to meet Putin
Trump had already announced a few hours after his inauguration on Monday that he wanted to talk to Putin as soon as possible. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, he recently reiterated his offer: "I would really like to meet with President Putin soon to end this war."
Putin was rather cautious about including Ukraine in possible talks that could lead to an end to the fighting. Kiev will "have to lift the ban on talks with Russia under pressure from the West, which supplies Ukraine", said Putin.
