Former Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi has recalled the horror of the storming of the US Capitol four years ago. "It was a tragedy and we can't deny what it was," the Democrat told CBS News.

On Monday, the US Congress is due to officially certify Donald Trump's victory in the November election. Four years ago, when Trump lost to Joe Biden, angry supporters of the Republican stormed the Capitol to prevent the result from being certified. They also invaded Pelosi's office. Trump had previously incited his supporters in a speech by claiming that he had been deprived of a victory through massive electoral fraud. Five people died as a result of the riots. Many of the attackers have since been convicted - although Trump has held out the prospect of pardons.

Although no one expects similar scenes to occur this year, high security measures are in place around the site. Pelosi said she hoped that everything would be peaceful. However, she said it was sad that Trump was still not accepting his 2020 defeat. "He has now won the election (...), he should be triumphant about that. But to keep fighting a battle that he knows he lost is pretty sad." Trump will be sworn in as president on January 20.
