In the sealed-off Gaza Strip, the first displaced Palestinians have made their way back to their homes in the north of the devastated coastal region. Footage posted on Palestinian social media this morning showed thousands of Palestinians walking from the south side of the Netzarim Corridor, which was established by the Israeli military, towards the north of the devastated coastal area. The corridor divides the Gaza Strip into two parts. Israel's army had allowed people to return from 06:00 (CET).

As part of an agreement between Israel and Hamas, it was originally planned that people would be allowed to travel from the south to the north via a designated route one week after the start of the ceasefire. However, as the Islamist Hamas did not release an abducted Israeli civilian on Saturday as agreed, Israel initially blocked the return. However, Hamas has now agreed to release the Israeli-German hostage this week. Israel then gave the green light for the return of the Gaza residents.
