Speaking to FDP delegates in Bern, President Karin Keller-Sutter defended compliance with the debt brake. Healthy finances are not a matter for accountants, but are of fundamental importance to state policy.
They ensure that Switzerland remains capable of acting, said the Finance Minister at a podium discussion on Saturday, casting a glance at neighboring countries. The coalition in Germany, for example, had famously broken down over financial policy.
In Austria, the coalition negotiations had broken down over budget issues. France was unable to stabilize due to its financial situation and Italy was heavily indebted. "They are simply not role models," said Keller-Sutter. "We have to do things differently and fight to ensure that the debt brake is adhered to."
At the heart of the delegates' meeting is a debate on Switzerland's "liberal success model", which the FDP wants to strengthen.
