NATO fears that the people in Ukraine are facing extremely difficult months ahead. "Russia continues to massively attack Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure," explained the new NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in a press conference following a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The country could therefore be facing its harshest winter to date since the start of the large-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.

Regarding the NATO states' support for Ukraine, Rutte said that he would push for more help at the contact group meeting planned for Saturday in Ramstein, Rhineland-Palatinate. Representatives of countries that provide military support to Ukraine want to meet there. "NATO must and will do more to help Ukraine," said the Dutchman. Rutte also called on the allies to further increase their defense spending. Spending two percent of the gross domestic product will clearly not be enough to achieve the military capability goals, he said.
