The Russian armed forces have reportedly expanded their bridgehead west of the Oskil River in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

Units of the Russian Army Group West in the Kharkiv region have captured the village of Sapadne, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow announced. There has been no official confirmation of this from Kiev to date. The information cannot be verified independently.

The Russian military has been trying for months to advance westwards in the Kharkiv region and recapture the strategically important town of Kupyansk on the Oskil. The Ukrainian defenders are under pressure on this section of the front, as in the entire east of the country.

Russia occupied Kupyansk a few days after the start of the war of aggression ordered by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin almost three years ago, but had to vacate it in the course of a Ukrainian counter-offensive in the fall of 2022. The Oskil is considered a natural barrier to stop the advance of Russian troops. However, Russian units have already crossed the river north of Kupjansk and formed a bridgehead.
