The administration of US President Donald Trump has continued the enormous cuts in government agencies at the renowned scientific institutions NOAA and Nasa. It affects two renowned science agencies - and a senior position in the process.

"In order to optimize our workforce and in accordance with an executive order, Nasa is beginning a phased approach to reducing its workforce," the US space agency (Nasa) told the German news agency DPA. A total of 23 employees are affected, including the agency's chief scientist, Katherine Calvin.

Media report up to 1000 jobs

According to US media reports, up to 1,000 jobs are to be cut at the NOAA weather and oceanography agency following previous cuts. That is ten percent of all employees.

NOAA did not initially respond to an inquiry from DPA. However, the agency's website has already warned of longer processing times for inquiries "due to redundancies".

Only recently, thousands of scientists in the USA demonstrated against the Trump administration's policy of cutting research. Experts have warned that this could halt important research into diseases, for example, or that data for weather forecasts could no longer be collected. Until now, US research institutions have been regarded as global leaders in many areas and have attracted scientists from all over the world.
