On the A44 highway near the German-Belgian border, the federal police made an unusual discovery: a 60-year-old driver was stopped transporting an artillery cannon on the trailer of his van. According to his own statements, the man had bought the cannon for 9,000 euros in Belgium and claimed to be a passionate collector. However, the officers could not immediately determine whether the heavy gun had been rendered completely unusable, so they confiscated it.
The incident occurred at a border crossing near Aachen, where the driver was stopped in a routine check, according to the police. The 60-year-old's load came as a surprise to the federal police, as it was a large-caliber weapon, which normally falls under the War Weapons Control Act.
The man could face serious consequences
This law strictly regulates the possession and transportation of military weapons and equipment that are classified as weapons of war.
The gun is now being examined by specialists to determine whether it has actually been rendered unusable and can therefore be classified as a decorative item. However, if it turns out to be a fully functional artillery piece, the man could face serious consequences for a possible violation of the War Weapons Control Act.
The driver assured the officers that he was not aware of any criminal offense and had only purchased the gun for his private collection.
