Almost four weeks after an assault on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, charges have been brought against a 39-year-old man. This was announced by the defendant's lawyer to the Danish news agency Ritzau. The Copenhagen District Court will hear the case on August 6 and 7.

Frederiksen was attacked in a square in the center of Copenhagen on June 7, when she was on her way to have coffee with a friend. The man is accused of punching the head of government in the upper arm. The Polish citizen, who has lived in Denmark for several years, denied his guilt in court. Frederiksen suffered a slight whiplash injury and canceled several appointments in the days following the attack.

Investigators do not believe that the attack was a planned attack with a political motive. Instead, the man is said to have been under the influence of alcohol and possibly drugs. According to Ritzau, he must expect to be expelled from the country.
