Refugee, Asylum Majority of the population rejects immigration ban according to study

Three out of five people in Switzerland reject an immigration ban to control immigration, according to a study. However, a majority of respondents also believe that open borders are not a solution.

According to the "Opportunities Barometer 2024" study published in Lucerne on Monday, a ban on immigration for people outside the EU/EFTA would only be rejected by a narrow margin. The political integration of residents with foreign citizenship or the construction of more roads were also only narrowly rejected as measures to control immigration.

On the other hand, over 70 percent of respondents were in favour of expanding public transport, working beyond the AHV retirement age and more daycare centres in order to make better use of the domestic workforce potential. More than 6,300 people from all parts of the country were surveyed by the Demoscope polling institute on behalf of the private Larix Foundation for the 10 Million Switzerland study.
