Two Lebanese soldiers have been killed by an Israeli attack in Lebanon, according to the armed forces. Three others were injured, according to a statement from the Lebanese military on X. The alleged attack is said to have targeted an army center in the village of Kafra in the south of Lebanon. There was initially no confirmation of the incident from the Israeli armed forces.

Lebanon's caretaker head of government, Najib Mikati, condemned the alleged Israeli attack in the strongest terms and spoke of a "crime against Lebanon" against which the international community must take a stand.

Not the first incident in which Lebanese soldiers have been harmed

The Lebanese army is not actually Israel's declared opponent in the war. It is considered comparatively weak. The Israeli army's offensive is aimed at Hezbollah, the Shia militia allied with Iran, which has fired thousands of rockets from Lebanon at Israel since the start of the Gaza war. Nevertheless, this is not the first incident in which Lebanese soldiers have been injured.

Israel is insisting on the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, according to which Hezbollah should withdraw from the south of the country. The Lebanese army was supposed to take control of the area with the help of the UN observer mission Unifil. However, it did not succeed. Blue helmet soldiers have also been injured by Israeli fire.
