Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has considered the possibility of attacking Iran's nuclear facilities, according to media reports. "Iran is more vulnerable than ever to damage to its nuclear facilities. There is now a way to eliminate the threat," the "Jerusalem Post" quotes the minister as saying. Katz, who previously served as foreign minister, recently took over the defense portfolio following the dismissal of his predecessor Joav Galant.
Israel accuses Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, while Iran denies this and denies Israel's right to exist. Katz emphasized the opportunity to "achieve the most important goal of thwarting and eliminating the threat of the annihilation of the State of Israel", as reported by the Times of Israel. Israel had already destroyed radar and missile facilities in Iran in an attack in October.
However, some of Iran's nuclear facilities are so deep underground that, according to experts, only the US military would be able to destroy them. At best, Israel could achieve a delay in the nuclear program through attacks. US President Joe Biden rejects an attack on the nuclear facilities. The position of US President-elect Donald Trump on this issue remains unclear.
