Another judge and his bodyguard were seriously injured in the attack. The security authorities are investigating the identity and motive of the perpetrator. According to unconfirmed reports, the attacker was a member of the kitchen staff at the judicial authority.

State media described the incident as an "act of terrorism" against two judges. According to observers, the attack could also have been politically motivated, as the two clerics were responsible for numerous sentences against dissidents.
