In the USA, initial jobless claims have unexpectedly fallen. Their number fell by 9,000 to 211,000 last week, as the Department of Labor announced in Washington on Thursday.

Economists had expected an average increase to 221,000 applications.

The weekly initial claims are observed on the financial markets because they are seen as an indicator of general developments on the US labor market. This plays an important role in the Fed's interest rate decisions. The Fed recently dampened expectations of further interest rate cuts.
