In the midst of the dispute in the South Caucasus republic of Georgia over the results of the parliamentary elections, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has come to Tbilisi for a visit. Orban is ideologically close to the national-conservative ruling party Georgian Dream in the country in the South Caucasus.

He had already congratulated the party on Saturday, even before reliable results were available. The party, which advocates economic relations with Russia, was officially declared the winner, although Georgian and international observers registered many violations of the rules. The opposition demonstrated on the streets of Tbilisi on Monday evening, refusing to recognize the result and calling for new elections.

Orban is to be officially received by Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday, the government in Tbilisi announced. Hungary currently holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council. However, most EU states are critical of Orban's unilateral actions, in which he defends his pro-Moscow position. The German ambassador in Tbilisi, Peter Fischer, wrote on the social network X that Orban speaks for Hungary in Georgia, not for the EU.
