The Shia militia Hezbollah wants to commemorate its slain leader Hassan Nasrallah with an event in the southern suburbs of Beirut today.

The charismatic leader of the Shia militia, which is allied with Iran, was killed by an Israeli air strike on Hezbollah headquarters on September 27.

Martyrdom plays a central role in Shia Islam

The event entitled "Light from Light" was announced for 5.45 p.m. local time (4.45 p.m. CET). Hezbollah supporters want to gather at the "holy place of martyrdom" - the former location of the organization's headquarters in the Haret Hreik district is likely to become a kind of shrine. The theme of martyrdom plays a central role in Shiite Islam.

Following the escalation of the clashes with Hezbollah, Israel carried out countless air strikes on the Shia militia's stronghold in the south of the Lebanese capital. Only a few days ago, the two sides agreed on a ceasefire.
