According to its own statements, the Islamist Hamas is committed to observing the ceasefire with Israel. Spokesman Abu Obaida said in a TV address that the mediators must force Israel to do the same. "We are striving to make all conditions and phases of the agreement a success in order to spare the blood of our people," Obaida continued.

The people of Gaza had put up "historic resistance" in recent months. It will go down in the history of the Palestinian people, said Obaida. The sacrifices and the blood shed by the people had not been in vain.

Israel's military spokesman Daniel Hagari, for his part, declared that Israel would not tolerate any deviations from the agreements of the initial six-week ceasefire. A second and third phase of the ceasefire is to follow - provided that Israel and Hamas can agree on further steps in negotiations that are still pending.
