Around six months after an Israeli airstrike on the then Hamas military chief, Mohammed Deif, the Islamist terrorist organization has officially confirmed his death for the first time. Hamas spokesman Abu Obeida also declared for the first time that the third highest-ranking Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip, Marwan Issa, was dead.

Israel's military had attacked Deif last July near Chan Junis in the south of the coastal region and, according to its own statements, killed him. Dozens of people were killed in the attack. In March 2024, Israel's army had already announced the killing of Deif's deputy Marwan Issa in an airstrike.
Just over three months ago, Israel also declared Hamas leader Jihia al-Sinwar dead. Hamas confirmed this at the time. He was considered the mastermind of the massacre in Israel on October 7, 2023. As head of the Qassam Brigades, Deif also played a central role in the terrorist attack on Israel, which left more than 1,200 dead.
