Gonzalez Bassi received 5848 votes in the run-off, Pittet 5640. 38.83 percent of voters turned out, as the city authorities announced on Sunday.
This means that the city presidency remains in social democratic hands, as it has for the past five decades. Gonzalez Bassi succeeds Erich Fehr, who has been mayor for many years.
The people of Biel/Bienne had already appointed their new authorities on September 22. The city government remained in red-green hands. The municipal council is now made up of: Lena Frank (Greens), Glenda Gonzalez Bassi (SP), Anna Tanner (SP), Natasha Pittet (PLR) and Beat Feurer (SVP). A run-off was required for the election of the mayor.
