Following the agreement on a ceasefire in the Gaza war, the Group of Seven leading Western industrialized nations (G7) has called for compliance with the agreements. "This is a significant development," said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the current G7 chairman.

The agreement between Israel and the Islamist Hamas could pave the way for the return of all remaining hostages to Israel and the civilian population to their homes in the Gaza Strip. It could also facilitate urgently needed humanitarian aid.

"We call on all parties to abide by the terms of the agreement," it continued. In the long term, the G7 countries called on all sides to negotiate "constructively" on subsequent phases of the agreement in order to achieve a permanent end to hostilities.

The G7 also "unequivocally" condemned the Hamas terror attack on October 7, 2023, saying, "We mourn the tens of thousands of lives lost in and since this brutal attack, and the immeasurable suffering of Palestinians and Israelis."

The group also includes the USA, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, Italy and France. The ceasefire will initially apply for 42 days. During this time, 33 of the 98 hostages still held by Hamas are to be returned - even if it is unclear how many of them are still alive.

In return, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners are to be released from Israeli prisons. The Israeli government has yet to approve the negotiated agreement.
