Politics Further prison sentence against Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner

The Iranian judiciary has imposed an additional six-month prison sentence on Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, who is imprisoned in Tehran, for "disobedience" and ignoring instructions from the prison authorities.

According to a post on Mohammadi's Instagram profile, which is run by relatives and friends, the sentence is a reaction by the judiciary to her ongoing protest against executions in the country.

A group of supporters also condemned the new prison sentence because of the 52-year-old's state of health. She needs medical care. However, she is being denied this by the management of the notorious Ewin prison in Tehran. Mohammadi suffers from heart failure. Her condition is said to have deteriorated drastically.

According to reports, the Nobel Peace Prize winner must remain in custody for at least another two years. The physicist has been arrested 13 times in recent years and sentenced to long prison terms each time. The human rights activist was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and against the death penalty.
