Zurich politician Verena Diener has died at the age of 75. She was an environmentalist from the very beginning, as the GLP paid tribute to its founding member in a press release.

Verena Diener was politically active from a young age: in 1982, Diener was one of the founding members of the Green Party in the district of Andelfingen and was elected its president. She then also sat on the National Council for the Greens from 1987 to 1997.

In 1995, she was elected to the Zurich cantonal government, where she served until 2007. She headed the Health Directorate for the entire twelve years.

During her time on the cantonal council, the Green Party of Zurich split in July 2004 under her leadership. Diener founded the Green Liberal Party (GLP) Zurich together with a number of party friends, including Martin Bäumle. With almost 200,000 votes, Diener was the first GLP politician to be elected to the Council of States in November 2007.

Verena Diener died on Friday last week at the age of 75, as the GLP announced on Friday. She leaves a big gap in the party.

Diener was a great role model, writes Zurich GLP National Councillor Corina Gredig on X. Both personally and politically. "She had a clear stance, entered into a dialog and sought compromise."
