The former head of the British and Canadian central banks, Mark Carney, has announced his candidacy for the leadership of the Liberal Party and thus for the office of Prime Minister.

"I'm doing this because Canada is the best country in the world," Carney told supporters in Edmonton on Thursday (local time). "But it could be even better".

The 59-year-old would replace former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation at the beginning of January after more than nine years in office.

Carney was Governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Prior to that, he was head of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013. "I'm not the usual suspect when it comes to politics, but this is not the time for ordinary politics," he said in Edmonton.

It is not the time for professional politicians like the leader of the Conservative Party, Pierre Poilievre. According to Canadian media reports, the Conservatives are currently leading in the polls.

According to media reports, the Liberals will decide on the new leader of their party on March 9. Carney could then also take over the post of Prime Minister - but only for a few weeks, until Parliament reconvenes on March 24.

The opposition could then force an early election with a vote of no confidence.
