EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is traveling to Ukraine for a visit.

She plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi in the capital Kiev on Friday, von der Leyen announced at a press conference in Brussels. Among other things, they will discuss help with Ukraine's energy supply ahead of the winter.

"The heating season starts in two weeks", said the Commission President. "As temperatures drop, the European Union is ready to step up its support for Ukraine. We are preparing for winter together."

The International Energy Agency had previously announced that Ukraine's energy infrastructure was under great pressure due to increasing Russian attacks on power plants, heating plants and transmission grids.

Power outages and water supply problems occur regularly, and the situation could worsen as the days get shorter and colder. Ukraine has been fending off a Russian invasion for over two and a half years.
