In future, researchers want to use drones to hunt for alien plants. This should make it easier to combat invasive plants, as the Swiss Center for Electronics and Microtechnology (CSEM) announced on Thursday.

Until now, so-called neophytes have mainly been mapped using time-consuming and cost-intensive inspections.
According to the CSEM, the difficulty in detecting neophytes from the air is that the plants are often only a few image pixels in size and can therefore hardly be distinguished from native plants. Artificial intelligence (AI) is therefore being used for the new neophyte radar. It is being developed by vegetation ecologists and data and sensor specialists.
In addition to CSEM, the University of Zurich, Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and SBB are also involved in the project.
