Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has spoken to US President-elect Donald Trump about Greenland, which he covets. In the phone call, Frederiksen referred to statements by Greenland's head of government Múte B. Egede that Greenland was not for sale, according to the Danish State Chancellery. The head of government had also said that Greenland itself was making a decision regarding its independence.

At the same time, she emphasized the importance of strengthening security in the Arctic, according to Copenhagen. The Kingdom of Denmark is prepared to take on even more responsibility for this. She also emphasized that Danish companies contribute to growth and jobs in the USA. The EU and the USA have a common interest in strengthening their trade with each other.

"We don't want to be Americans"

Trump has recently expressed interest in Greenland, which is part of Denmark, on several occasions. Back in December, he stated: "In the interest of national security and freedom in the world, the United States believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

At a recent press conference, he did not rule out the use of the military and economic coercion to gain control of the world's largest island or the Panama Canal.

Frederiksen and Egede have repeatedly said that the Greenlandic people themselves decide the future of their island. "We don't want to be Danes. We don't want to be Americans. We want to be Greenlanders, of course," Egede said at a press conference with Frederiksen in Copenhagen last week.
