The airport in the Syrian capital Damascus has resumed international operations. Just over a month after the fall of long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad, two flights to the United Arab Emirates have already taken off, an airport representative confirmed.

A plane from the Gulf emirate of Qatar is expected to arrive around midday. Following the rebels' lightning offensive at the beginning of December and the collapse of the old power structure, unknown persons had looted equipment at the airport.

Less than two weeks later, the first domestic flight after Assad's fall took place.

The new government, which emerged from the Islamist rebel group HTS, is trying to restore security in war-torn Syria.

After the long civil war, the country remains fragmented and deeply divided along sectarian lines. For millions of Syrians, Assad's fall brought great hope for a new beginning.
