The controversial President of the Cantonal Criminal Court of Ticino, Mauro Ermani, has tendered his resignation. His lawyer confirmed corresponding media reports to the Keystone-SDA news agency.

His lawyer cited his client's health problems as the reason for his resignation. These had worsened in the last two weeks. Ermani was keen to find a successor as quickly as possible.

The criminal court in Ticino currently has to make do with two fewer judges. The reason: in mid-December, the Ticino Judicial Council dismissed two judges from the cantonal criminal court with immediate effect.

The two judges had reported court president Mauro Ermani for the criminal offense of pornography, among other things. In September, however, Ermani was exonerated of this accusation.

The two judges' charges amounted to a "serious breach of their duties as magistrates", summarized the Ticino Judicial Council. Such a complaint against a colleague was "unacceptable" and "incompatible with the office of a magistrate".

Even before the two judges were removed from office, the Ticino cantonal criminal court was repeatedly in the headlines. Among other things, rumors were circulating about a poor working atmosphere and alleged bullying against a secretary. That very secretary is said to have been sent a raunchy picture via WhatsApp by the now resigning president of the court.
