The canton of Fribourg has extended the buffer zone around the discovery of an Asian longhorned beetle in Marly. It also wants to cut down trees as a precautionary measure. It suspects further beetles in the region, as it announced on Thursday.

Fribourg is extending the buffer zone, from which no plant waste may be removed, to include the two known infestations. It is also ordering the felling of certain deciduous tree species in the core zone, as the Office for Forests and Nature (WNA) announced at a media conference. This is provided for in the Federal Plant Health Ordinance.
In October 2024, a live female Asian longhorned beetle and fertilized eggs were discovered in Marly. Genetic analyses indicated that the beetle was a descendant of the 2014 infestation. The WNA therefore assumes that there are more beetles in the region.
Despite an intensive search, no further evidence has been found so far. The WNA called on the public to report any evidence. The Asian longhorned beetle is particularly dangerous for deciduous trees.
