According to the canton, the observations show that the wolves are no longer afraid of humans. Since mid-December, wolves have been observed near several villages in the Sernftal valley, as the Department of Civil Engineering and Environment of the Canton of Glarus wrote in a press release on Friday. In January, two wolves were spotted near a farm in Elm. One of the animals approached a four-year-old child despite shouts from adults.
In its press release, the canton referred to the Swiss Wolf Concept of the Federal Office for the Environment. This describes problematic wolf behavior. This is the case when wolves regularly appear in the vicinity of settlements and display behavior directed towards humans or their domestic dogs.
The game warden is responsible for shooting wolves. The order is limited to 30 days. Any appeals will be suspended, the canton added.
