British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump hours before his inauguration. He also evoked the special relationship between the two countries.

"With President Trump's long-standing affection and historic links with the United Kingdom, I am confident that this deep friendship will continue," Starmer said, according to a statement from the seat of government at 10 Downing Street.

The relationship between the social democratic Labor government and the Republicans under Trump is considered tense.
