Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been discharged from hospital after an operation for a brain haemorrhage. "He is stable, walking, eating and speaking normally. He had a very good post-operative phase, which was in line with expectations," said doctor Roberto Kalil at a press conference in São Paulo on Sunday, just under a week after the operation at the Sírio-Libanês Hospital there.

The 79-year-old is now to remain in São Paulo until at least Thursday to be monitored. He will only be allowed limited physical activity for the next 15 days, but will be able to work from home as normal.

Lula was examined in the capital Brasília on Monday evening due to headaches. A magnetic resonance imaging scan had revealed the brain hemorrhage, a consequence of an accident on October 19. The president was then transferred to another unit of the same hospital in São Paulo, where he underwent a craniotomy (opening of the skull) to drain the hematoma.

The president, who appeared before the press himself wearing a hat on his release, said he felt well. "I am alive, unharmed and ready to work (...) I have a lot of work ahead of me."

Lula suffered a cut to his head in October and therefore canceled his participation in the Brics summit in Kazan, Russia.
