Josep Borrell suggests temporarily halting political exchanges with Israel.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell has advised the member states of the European Union to suspend regular political dialog with Israel for the time being. This recommendation is based on reports by independent international organizations which indicate that Israel may be violating human rights and international humanitarian law.

Reports of human rights violations

The reports supporting Borrell's proposal come from various international organizations involved in human rights monitoring. In their investigations, these organizations have found evidence that Israel may have violated international standards in certain cases. These allegations have caused concern in the EU and led to discussions about future cooperation with Israel.

Reactions within the EU

Within the European Union, Borrell's proposal has received a mixed reception. Some member states support the idea of suspending the dialog in order to send a clear signal to Israel. Others, however, are in favor of continuing the dialogue in order to be able to continue to influence Israeli policy. Discussions on how to deal with the reports and Borrell's proposal are still ongoing and will continue in the coming weeks.
