Bangladesh's interim government has asked neighboring India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has fled the country. The request was sent to the Indian government in the form of a note verbale, reported the newspaper "The Daily Star" and other local media, citing the foreign affairs advisor in Dhaka, Touhid Hossain. The 77-year-old is accused of crimes against humanity, among other things.

The long-serving head of government resigned at the beginning of August following mass protests and serious clashes between demonstrators and security forces and was brought to India by military helicopter.
Hundreds of people were killed in the protests, which were led by students. Her government at the time had tried to crack down on the protesters.
The protests were initially directed against the planned reintroduction of a controversial quota system in the civil service. Later, the demonstrators demanded the resignation of Hasina, who had ruled the country in an increasingly authoritarian manner. After she fled, an interim government led by Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus was installed with the backing of the military.
A court in Bangladesh had already issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several other people, including former party friends of the politician, in October. It was initially unclear how India would react to the extradition request.
