Argentina has asked the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague to apply for an arrest warrant against the authoritarian Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

Following the presidential election on July 28, which was overshadowed by allegations of fraud, actions by the Venezuelan government could constitute crimes against humanity, the Argentinian Foreign Ministry announced. Argentina wants to obtain an arrest warrant for Maduro and other members of his government with an official request in The Hague on Monday.

After the election, the Venezuelan electoral authority, which is loyal to the party, declared the president, who has been in power since 2013, the winner. The police cracked down on demonstrators protesting against Maduro. According to the non-governmental organization Provea, 24 people lost their lives.

The opposition accuses the government in Caracas of electoral fraud and claims victory for its candidate Edmundo González Urrutia. Argentina, other Latin American countries and the USA have recognized the 75-year-old ex-diplomat as the winner. The Venezuelan Attorney General's Office has issued an arrest warrant for him.
