Not all states are equally important
- In the US electoral system, the head of state is not elected directly by the people, but indirectly via the Electoral College.
- This is why states that have a particularly large number of electors or that sometimes vote Democrat and sometimes Republican - so-called swing states - are particularly contested and can tip the scales in the final result.
