Inflation is also having an impact on the Swiss hospitality industry. Many guests are now less generous with their tips than they used to be. New payment options are putting additional pressure on the income of service staff.

This is the conclusion of a survey of 1066 people conducted by Marktagent on behalf of Bank Cler and published on Thursday. Specifically, four out of ten people stated that they tip less than before due to the higher budget burden. On the other hand, only 4 percent are more generous when it comes to tipping.

Good service counts

In general, however, nine out of ten people still tip if the service is good. And the amount of the tip still depends on the amount of the bill. According to the survey, the average tip is 9 francs or 4.5 percent for a bill of 200 francs. For 30 francs, the average is 2.50 francs or 8.5 percent.

The respondents also stated that friendliness and good service have the greatest influence on the willingness to tip. However, the request to tip for digital payments is less appreciated. Over half (59%) of survey participants find such a request unappealing.
